Finished reading: Empire of Ivory by Naomi Novik 📚

The series remains fun if a bit too YA for my tastes. That said, I definitely intend to continue the series.

  • Top Tips for Dungeon Masters

Don’t build stories during prep. Watch them unfold at the table. Bring the world, the situation, the quests, and the non-player characters to the table and watch and react as the characters crash into them. We don’t know what’s going to happen. Expecting the game to go a certain way is the most common mistake DMs make and have made for nearly four decades. Remember that the story unfolds at the table, and not before.

This is the lesson I remind myself of the most. It takes so much pressure off the game master (me in most cases).

Tink contemplates life, the universe, and everything. The Oregon coast has that effect.

Tink, a 2.5 year old black Daniff, looks over the ocean from a cliff while the midafternoon sun beams down on him. The photo is taken on the Oregon Coast.

  • Apple pulls its ads from X after Musk’s antisemitic posts

Apple has reportedly followed IBM by pulling advertising from X, formerly Twitter, as the platform’s owner Elon Musk made posts agreeing with antisemitic conspiracy theories, supporting white pride, and continued a fight with the Anti-Defamation League.

    Finally (to steal a line).

Finished reading: The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova 📚

Super academic historian nerds run afoul of the original fanged one. Kostova is a master of immersion, of being able to transport me fully into the world of the book. I feel like I have memories from the story, as if I lived parts of it.

Epic and masterful. My brain needs time to digest this. And what a cliff hanger of an ending.

  • Vision Pro, Spatial Video, and Panoramic Photos

Nothing you’ve ever viewed on a screen, however, can prepare you for the experience of watching these spatial videos, especially the ones you will have shot yourself, of your own family and friends. They truly are more like memories than videos.… There’s my friend, Joanna, right in front of me — like I could reach out and touch her — but that was 30 minutes ago, in a different room.

Prepare to be moved, emotionally, when you experience this.

As a person with aphantasia I am very excited to try this.

I’ve got The Historian on hold at the library and decided to see what else Kostova has written which is how I found The Shadow Land. It is wonderful! Her characters are bringing Bulgaria to life. The plot is good and though I have no idea where it is going it doesn’t even matter. I just enjoy spending time these people.

Bleh. Kept waiting for this book to get smart or have a twist and instead it just ended with no real ethical or intellectual exploration of the issues involved.

Reminds me of a PNW version of one of my favorite rides in the Netherlands. This is right off some private farm land in Sisters, Oregon.

Beautiful reservoir with storm clouds reflecting on the surface. An overgrown dirt road is on the right next to the shore.

Read the whole series two decades ago. Laura I were watching Um, Actually and they had an Earthsea question which inspired me to read them again. I had forgotten just how gifted and unique Ursula K. Le Guin was. The prose in this series is like nothing else.
